Civil War Vivandiere

1860s Civil War Vivandiere

Inspired by the vivandieres of the American Civil War in the 1860s, I created this uniform in three main pieces: jacket with hand sewn button holes, pleated skirt, and breeches or pants. The jacket was based on extant women’s garments from the era, and the pants were based on men’s Civil War uniform pants and altered to suit the female form. The skirt is also inspired by the skirt construction methods of the period. The fabrics are all wool and linen. The collar is removable and attaches with a cameo brooch, as was typical of women’s fashion.
